Anyone who knows me knows that travel is a huge part of my life. Little did I know, it would also spark a passion for me here in the States.
During a trip to Colombia in 2019, some friends and I decided to try an infused ice cream shop. While the experience was memorable, the actual product was barely palatable. Still, I enjoyed the social outing with my friends. A few months later, on vacation in Italy, I visited an extremely elegant café with more than a few droolworthy desserts. I realized that this was the caliber of treat that people (namely, I) deserved. From there an idea was born to elevate both of those experiences ...in more ways than one.
Currently when you mention CBD infusions, most people think gummies, chocolates, or brownies – and the buck really stops there. I wanted to expand how we thought of this industry, and gelato seemed like an excellent way to do that.
I ran the idea by my best friend, who is the sounding board for all my wild ideas. She didn’t think this one was so crazy. At that point, I knew I wanted to do this right.
My plan was to use vacation to do a brief apprenticeship under a master gelato chef in Italy. Thanks to the pandemic, that plan quickly fizzled. However, accommodations were made that allowed me to take classes virtually. Great, I thought ...until I realized I’d be training on Italian time.
However, I was very invested in this idea, so I signed up.
I trained each day from 3am – 8am and started my day job at 9am, ending around 6/7pm. Exhausted is an understatement. But I was very dedicated to both, so I did what needed to be done. After successfully completing each course level, I became a certified gelato chef.
As you might imagine, mastering a new skill and launching a business during a global pandemic has been quite an adventure. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Having the ability to create something I love and share it with the world has been extremely fulfilling. Every day, I’m learning new ways to challenge myself within the art of gelato making.
